Morgan Hill – A Morgan Hill man was flown to Valley Medical Center Thursday morning after he was extricated from his Chevrolet SUV following a rollover accident on Monterey Road.

Lester Nelson, 55, was apparently traveling northbound just south of East Middle Avenue as Doris Clair, 83, was traveling southbound. She apparently turned left onto East Middle Avenue, directly into the path of Nelson.

Clair was taken by ambulance to Saint Louise Regional Hospital as a precaution, but she received only minor abrasions on her forearm caused by the airbag.

Nelson’s left hand was broken, and he also received a thoracic spine (upper back) fracture, according to Morgan Hill traffic officer Max Cervantes. Nelson’s dog, which was thrown from the vehicle, was reported to be in stable condition at South County Animal Hospital.

“Rollovers are very violent crashes; fortunately, that driver was buckled in and was not ejected,” Swing said.

Cervantes said speed is not believed to have been a factor in the collision; the cause appears to be a right-of-way violation, he said.

Alcohol and drugs also were not a factor, officers at the scene said.
