Morgan Hill Swim Club was represented by 73 Makos in last
weekend’s Labor Day Meet, an event that featured 442 swimmers from
36 Pacific Swimming teams at the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center
MORGAN HILL — Morgan Hill Swim Club was represented by 73 Makos in last weekend’s Labor Day Meet, an event that featured 442 swimmers from 36 Pacific Swimming teams at the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center.
The Makos’ contingent included almost 20 newbies, who began swimming in late spring and early summer.
Morgan Hill swimmers clocked 53 new ‘B’ times, 19 new ‘A’ times, snagged a new ‘AA’ standard, captured one Far Western ‘Q’ time, established six new Pacific Reportable Times — used to establish Pacific Swimming’s top-10 and top-5 lists at the end of each season — and won nine events. When the water settled, the Makos placed fourth out of the 26 teams scored.
Earning new ‘B’ times for the Makos were 7-year-olds Christopher and Nicole Critzer, Owen Fry, 8, Dana Getreu, 13, Amanda Giacobbe, 12, Zachary Greymont, 13, Jarod Hatch, 10, Mackenzie Mitchell, 11, Shelby Mitchelle, 12, and 8-year-old Kayla Moore — who swam to seven new ‘B’ times in eight events. Also meeting ‘B’-time standards were Morgan Hill’s Joshua Parker, 13, Emily Pfefferlen, 9, Hannah Pfefferlen, 7, Paul Pham, 12, Andrew Pratt, 12, Joshua Rainbolt, 9, Tristan Rainbolt, 8, Quinn Rickard, 11, and young Madisson Walker.
Makos establishing one or more new ‘A’ times were Schuyler Chamberlain, 10, Bailey Chan, 8, Taylor Chan, 12, Alyssa Greymont, 12, Kenisha Johnson, 12, Devon Macdonald, 12, Victoria Martini, 11, Abi Pfefferlen, 11, Evan Richardson, 11, Grace Smith, 9, and Cassie Tran, 12. Taylor Chan and Alyssa Greymont collected three apiece.
Garielle Smith, 13, met a new ‘AA’ standard in the 200-yard individual medley and scored in the elite Gold Flight — top-eight placers in each age group and event — in four events, including a win in the 200-yard butterfly. Ricardo Ramon, 6, also placed first in an event and earned points in all six of his races. On top of winning the 25-yard breaststroke, Ramon had three third-place finishes, two fourth-place finishes.
The young Makos faired well throughout the meet. Reyna Cruz, 6, placed in two events, Karrine Long, 6, placed in the 25-yard freestyle, Kiara Moore, 6, placed in two events, Anne Rickard, 6, scored in her four events with three second-place finishes and one third, and Elizabeth Sidebotham, 5, placed in all three of her events.
Morgan Hill’s Lauren Akin, 12, Christiana Bridges, 13, Ricki Cruz, 10, Rima Ferdun, 15, Sesa Ferdun, 11, Tanner Fry, 10, and Eduardo Hernandez, 12, scored in the top eight with Hernandez scoring in his eight events and clocking seven personal-best times. Also racing into the top eight were their teammates Daniel Parker, 13, Abi Pfefferlen, 11, and 15-year-old Prashan Welipitiya.
Several Makos performed steadily and had great swims and good results. Elijah Urbina enjoyed his weekend immensely, swiming one great race after another. Urbina, 10, won seven of his eight events and PRed in each of them. He earned six new PRTs, one new ‘Q’ time and snagged the boys 9-10 High Point honors.
The Labor Day Meet concluded the summer schedule. The Makos, who took their break after the long course Far Western Championships, are back to training. Several new swimmers look promising for the the upcoming short course season.
