– In honor of Mother’s Day, children can create a handmade card and handmade soap for mom from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, at BookSmart, 80 E. Second St. There is a $5 fee. Please RSVP (408) 778-6467 to ensure space and supplies. Parent participation is required for children 5 years and younger. Parents of older children are asked to stay in the store during the workshop.

Free comic book day

– Anime 101, a Morgan Hill comic book store, is one of thousands of shops around the world celebrating the comic book art form from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. On Free Comic Book Day, more than 2 million comic books will be given away by participating stores, introducing as many people as possible to comic books.

Learn the art of backpacking

– Volunteer and avid backpacker, Manny Pitta, will look at lightweight equipment and teach techniques at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Henry Coe State Park headquarters.

Music at Mount Madonna

– Mount Madonna School alumna Prabha Pacey (’86) and Friends offer a night of music, Saturday at 7:30 p.m., to benefit MMS’ Capital Campaign. Pacey will be joined by fellow alumni Sangita Diaz Houston (’99), Ava Mangus (’08), Ian Rusconi (’06) and MMS faculty and staff members Sampad Kachuck, Bob Caplan and Martin Krilanovich. Mother’s Day in the park

AARP safe driving class offered

– At the nation’s first and largest classroom refresher course for motorists 50 and older, participants will familiarize themselves with driver safety and new laws. Three-year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on auto insurance upon completion of this one-day program. No tests, class materials and a certified AARP instructor are provided by the American Association of Retired Persons. You do not have to be a member of AARP. There is a minimal DMV certificate fee.

Play Bridge at Senior Center

– Thursday, May 12 is National Doodle Day and BookSmart invites the public to “leave your mark” on a giant poster in the store from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. They will provide the markers, pencils, and crayons. Every doodler gets a free ice cream cone! BookSmart is located at 80 E. Second St.
