Lynn Liebschutz would never seek recognition for the decades of service he has donated to the youth and community of Morgan Hill, according to those who know him. But when the Chamber of Commerce found out about everything he has done, they decided to name him the 2010 Salute Man of the Year.

Liebschutz, 72, has lived in Morgan Hill for more than 30 years, the entirety of which he has been heavily involved in the local Boy Scouts organization.

Liebschutz could not be contacted by press time as he is in Thailand on business. But his wife, Katheryn Liebschutz, said he first became involved in the community when their two sons joined the Boy Scouts.

“He kind of carried on from there,” she said.

Lynn Liebschutz has served on the homeowners’ association for the Jackson Oaks subdivision, where he and his wife live and raised their sons. He has volunteered for the Morgan Hill Grange, helping prepare and serve the facility’s monthly breakfast, according to a written nomination submitted by neighbor Terry Mahurin. He has volunteered for Britton Middle School band boosters, and in this role helped sell refreshments during Bingo games and sold strawberry shortcakes at the boosters’ Mushroom Mardi Gras booth.

An engineer for Hitachi Global Storage Technology, Liebschutz has combined his affinity for science with his desire to help the youth. His wife said he has worked with the Santa Clara County Science Fair organization.

“He is a scientist himself, and he tries to encourage young people to do that,” she said, adding that he competed in science fairs up to the national level when he was a youth.

Mayor Steve Tate, who also nominated Liebschutz for the Salute award, has known him as long as both men have lived in Morgan Hill. Tate described Liebschutz as a quiet volunteer who utilizes his many talents for community service.

“He’s one of those all-around kind of guys that’s low-profile, and is always doing things,” Tate said.
