Lourdes Robledo didn’t see this one coming, but the San Martin Gwinn Elementary School teacher was pleasantly surprised when the Morgan Hill Federation of Teachers announced her as their 2013 Teacher of the Year.
During the Federation’s March 27 general meeting at Guglielmo Winery in Morgan Hill, fellow teacher Denise Simmons praised Robledo, a second grade teacher, for her more than three decades of dedication to local students.
“Each student in her class is engaged in the subject matter, whether it is writing, reading, or math,” said Simmons of Robledo. “Lourdes knows exactly where each student is in his or her learning and works cooperatively with the students to set high, but achievable goals.”
In her instruction, Robledo, who has taught in MHUSD for 34 years at San Martin Gwinn, has used Readers’ and Writers’ Workshops and GLAD strategies to improve student performance.
She also taught Spanish to approximately 15 non-Spanish speaking students, started a cooking club, and spearheaded the Migrant Summer School program at San Martin Gwinn.
“Not only does Lourdes help students to further their education, she also continues to take classes to learn new teaching strategies and concepts,” said Simmons of Lourdes.
Each year, teachers submit names of other teachers and their accomplishments to the union, which then makes the official choice.
