On Friday at the Overfelt JV Tournament, LO sophomore Brett Jones, wrestling at 147 pounds, took the championship at the 25th Annual Overfelt Junior Varsity Tournament. The tournament, a classic in the San Jose area, featured 33 teams from the entire Bay Area.

Jones pinned his first opponent from Evergreen in the second period, won a decision over his Hillsdale opponent, pinned his Monterey opponent in the semifinals in 49 seconds and scored a technical fall with a 17-2 score over his Monta Vista opponent in the finals.

It is the first time in recent history that Live Oak has had a winner at the Overfelt Tournament.

Jones’ LO teammate Buck Tanner, at 132 pounds, placed fifth.

Following Friday’s wins at Overfelt, LO coach Robert Fernandez and his daughter Moriah traveled to South San Francisco for the Central California Invitational Classic, a qualifier for the girls’ State Championships. Fernandez, a freshman, pinned all her opponents, including the fourth-ranked wrestler in the state, in taking the 132-pound championship.

This is the first time Live Oak has qualified a girl for the state championships, which will be held this Friday and Saturday in Vallejo. Moriah will be one of the four top-seeded wrestlers in California in her weight class

Meanwhile, the Sobrato High wrestling team will also be sending a wrestler to the girls’ state finals. Wrestling at SSF, Bulldog Jenenetta Marisclan qualified for the big tourney by taking second in her 100-pound weight class. Marisclan went 3-1 in four matches with three pins, according to Sobrato coach Ray Garza.

Sobrato’s Crystal Orozco also competed at the SSF tourney.

In other action, Sobrato also competed at the Overfelt JV tourney, and Gennaro Redmond had a breakthrough tourney, Garza said.

Redmond, a heavyweight, claimed the tourney title in his weight class by going a perfect 4-0, and beating a Gilroy opponent that had beaten him in their previous meeting.

Other Sobrato wrestlers who competed at the tourney included:

  • 130-pounder Jake Ortiz, who took fourth place despite having to retire due to injury in the semifinals.

  • 152-pounder Victor Gillespie, who took seventh.

  • And, 112-pounder Tim Hendersen.

On Wednesday, LO and Sobrato travel to Hollister-San Benito to take on the Haybalers.
