Cheers resounded as the Chapter’s Community Service Project, Restoring hope, garnered first place. Inga Huang, Alana Lee, and Celia Sachez were the editors of the report and the oral presentation team that went against some very stiff competition. First, the reports are submitted for screening from throughout California. Then, the top five reports are selected, and those chapters compete in an oral presentation to convince the judges.
Live Oak’s Chapter also won the most coveted award, the Dr. Jessie Graham Award, for being the most outstanding chapter in California. The oral presentation team for this honor was Inga Huang and Celia Sanchez. The basis for getting into the finals for this event is the Local Chapter Annual Business Report. Inga Huang and Celia Sanchez each won $1,000 California FBLA Scholarships for their active participation. Live Oak did well as only seven scholarships were given for the entire state.
Other awards included Celia Sanchez, second place, Job Interview; Inga Huang, fifth place, Word Processing II and eighth place, Future Business leader; and the team of Heather Phan and Kim Wakatsuki, tenth place, Desktop Publishing.
In addition, the chapter awards included second place, Largest Professional Membership and fourth place, largest chapter membership.
Guy Kawasaki, CEO, Garage Technology Ventures, a boutique investment bank for high technology companies, was the keynote speaker. His topic “Hind Sighs” was a 10-point format of advice on how to live and enjoy your life. Some of the tips included “pursue joy, not happiness” as joy is sporadic and happiness is more material wealth, “challenge the known and embrace the unknown,” “eat like a bird and poop like an elephant,” “learn to like yourself,” “enjoy your family,” and live off of your parents as long as you can.” The whole theme was to make the world a better place for everyone.
Besides the general sessions and competitions, workshops presented a wealth of information on topics such as “you are what you eat,” “what do you want to be?”, “Learn Strategy for your SAT,” “The power of yoga”, How to get that great job!”, “be a hero, save babies”, “Teach Kids about business”, “Show me the money: Paying for college”, and “steps to the future – engineering a P & J sandwich.”
