Azucena muscled up for a first-place 103-4 discus toss in the field competition, while Jesus rolled to a second-place finish in the 800 meters in the track competition.

In addition, LO’s Brandon Powell also took second in the 110 high hurdles for the Acorns.

Next weekend, LO standout Cobbie Jones will compete at the prestigious Stanford Invitational.

According to LO coach Dean Raymond, the meet doesn’t offer an 800-meter event, Jones’ specialty, so the junior will compete in the mile run.

LO softball

A rainout on Saturday won’t slow down the Live Oak High softball team’s Circle of Champions Tournament at Twin Creeks after all.

According to LO coach Barry McDonnell, the heavily used Sunnyvale softball complex will be available this weekend. So, all the tourney teams who made it to single-elimination bracket play will make the trip this Saturday.

The Acorns (6-1 overall) will play their Gold Bracket quarterfinal game against Carlmont at either 9am or 11am.

McDonnell said the semifinals and finals will be held later in the day.

This week, LO opens its Tri-County Athletic League season at North Salinas on Tuesday, then hosts Aptos in a non-league match-up on Thursday. Both games are set for 3:45pm.

LO tennis

In TCAL action last week, the LO boys tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to visiting Salinas on Tuesday.

No 3 singles player Casey McElroy got the closest to victory, dropping a close third-set tiebreaker.

LO plays at RLS today at 3:30pm.
