The Mount Madonna YMCA this month named Morgan Hill residents Steve Short the “Adult Volunteer of the Year” and Rick Wright the “Teen Volunteer of the Year.”
Local and regional YMCA officials honored the pair along with 14 other volunteers at the nonprofit fitness club’s annual volunteer recognition dinner May 8 in Campbell.
Short joined the Morgan Hill-based Mount Madonna YMCA in 1993. He participates in adult softball and volunteers as a youth sports coach. He also advocated for the YMCA’s partnership with the city to run fitness programs at the recently opened Centennial Recreation Center.
“Steve has been part of the force that resulted in the branch board of managers’ dynamic growth and effectiveness that started in 2003 and has continued through the present,” said Mount Madonna YMCA branch executive director Debbie Cupp in a news release. “When the city of Morgan Hill began planning the indoor recreation center … Steve was among the first to appear before the city council expressing his support for the Mount Madonna YMCA.”
Wright, 14, is an a student at Bellarmine College Preparatory school who began his involvement with the Morgan Hill-based Mount Madonna YMCA in 1995. As a volunteer, he’s done everything from answering phones to refereeing youth basketball games to helping out at the annual Healthy Kids Day event.
