Local athletes now have a chance to fulfill their dreams of playing professional sports. The Bay Area Panthers, of the Indoor Football League, will host open player tryouts this weekend for athletes trying to make the team’s 2023 roster.

Players will go through drills similar to the NFL scouting combine, according to a press release from the Panthers: 40-yard dash, broad jump, three-cone drill and maximum repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press.

“There are a lot of guys who have worked hard,” said Head Coach and General Manager Darren Arbet. “This is an opportunity to show how hard they’ve worked and what kind of talent we have in the Bay Area.”

Arbet will be assisted at the tryouts by coaches from Sobrato and Westmont High Schools, Gavilan College, ex-players and local youth football coach Michelle Farias.

Tryouts will be held on Feb. 25 at Live Oak High School, 1505 East Main Ave., with registration starting at 7:30am and introductions at 8:30am. The cost is $65 on Feb. 25 and $50 with early registration on the team website. On the day of the tryout, cash only with no checks or credit cards accepted.

The Panthers will take 40 players to training camp in early March with the final roster trimmed to 25 before the regular season opener against Arizona at the SAP Center on March 26, says the press release.
