On Sunday, Aug. 14, the Indian Association of South County (IASC) held its’ fourth annual Indian Independence Day celebrations at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center.

Renditions of both the American and Indian National Anthems were sung along with the raising of the Indian flag, before local dignitaries gave speeches commemorating the 70th anniversary of India’s independence.

Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate thanked the organization for coming together year after year to share this day and the Indian culture with the entire South County community and encouraged other groups to do the same.

Special Guest Speaker BV Jagadeesh, a successful Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist, spoke of how important it is to give back to the community by donating our time to any cause which reaches out to help those who are less fortunate.

IASC President Poonam Chabra said, “We celebrate our culture on special days like this to teach our children and grandchildren what struggle India, and many countries, face when fighting for independence—very similar to America’s independence struggle. We take pride in our culture and come together as a community several times a year for similar cultural celebrations to show all of our members what the spirit of community is all about. And we have tons of fun, too!”

Over 150 members of the community—young and old—attended the ceremony, which was followed by Indian food, ice cream and fun. The celebration was held one day early, so more people could attend. India attained its independence from the British Empire Aug. 15, 1947.
The IASC is a nonprofit organization and an initiative of the Indian Community of over 500 residents living in the cities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy, San Martin and Hollister. The mission of this association is to bring the spirit of community and awareness to the rich Indian culture.
