Hip Hop Craze dance studio put a notch in its belt over the July 27 weekend, taking second among dozens of groups at the Starbound National Competition in Lake Tahoe, Nev.
Starbound hosts six national finals spread across the United States, including one in Southern California and one in Tahoe.
A total of 28 dancers from the Morgan Hill studio competed, taking second in Production Showcase.
“They all had tears of joy. It was the first time I’ve seen happy tears from them,” said Tiffany Maaske, owner of Hip Hop Craze.
Maaske said the studio is pretty low key in terms of practice and competitions, so they routinely are at a disadvantage with other groups that practice and compete regularly.
“They did great,” Maaske said. “It was one of the best competitions they’ve had. I always think they do well, but this time they got to see who well they did and got acknowledged for it.”
Hip Hop Craze’s juniors— made up of 5 to 9 year olds — also took fourth in their age group.
Maaske said the team has quite a bit of girls who are competing for the first time this year, though this wasn’t their first competition. She said the team will take part in three to five competitions a year starting around February.
Hip Hop Craze will take a break for a couple weeks, but will start up again at the end of August with team tryouts.
