It’s been a while since the Live Oak Acorns had something to shoot for this late in the boys basketball season.

Their first league championship since 1988 and first playoff berth since 2006 are very much on the table, though, entering the final week of West Valley Division play. The Acorns face league front-runner Andrew Hill at 7 p.m. Wednesday in what promises to be a memorable Senior Night at Live Oak High School, then take off for San Jose and the woebegone Del Mar Dons on Friday.

The Acorns (11-11, 8-4) are red hot after upsetting Lincoln 46-43 on Saturday for their fourth consecutive win. They can wrap a 4-0 homestand against the Falcons and set themselves up for a realistic chance of sharing the West Valley Division crown. Andrew Hill still has to play Mount Pleasant, whom the Falcons beat 57-54 on Jan. 20.

Live Oak has been a second-half team, and it showed once again Saturday, as the Acorns pulled away late against the Lions (13-9, 9-3).

Reserve guard Nathaniel Batey, one of five Live Oak seniors who will be honored Wednesday, scored a career-high 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Luke Laguna made two from beyond the arc as well for part of his 10 points, and Eddie Plascencia chipped in 11 as the Acorns won for the fifth time in six games.

The Central Coast Sectional brackets will be announced next week after the league playoffs. The West Valley Division will send two teams to the Feb. 14-17 Blossom Valley Athletic League Tournament.

That, too, is still in play for Live Oak.

  • Sobrato plays its final home game against visiting Oak Grove at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Bulldogs will honor five seniors.

Girls basketball

Live Oak and Sobrato will honor their seniors at home Thursday. The Acorns host Overfelt, and the Bulldogs face Leland, both at 7 p.m.

Sobrato came from behind to beat Del Mar 40-31 on Saturday behind a career-high 23 points from Alyssa Firato.

Wrestling

Sobrato took only six wrestlers to Saturday’s Colt Invitational at El Camino High School but placed fifth out of 45 teams while producing five top-seven placers.

Brian Gomes (120 pounds) and Zach Zhang (145) won titles for their respective weights, and Evan Enright reached the 160-pounds final where he lost 2-0 to Burlingame’s Charlie Guttiari.

Brandon Lefore (152) placed fifth, and Thomas Burback (138) took seventh, also for the Bulldogs.
