MORGAN HILL — The club rugby team from Live Oak High School kicked off its 2009 season with an exhibition against Rio Rugby on Saturday at Live Oak High.

Rio — of the challenging Sacramento Valley High School Rugby Conference — won 36-5.

Under clear sky, both teams came out ready to play. Rio converted a try to open the scoring in the 15th minute and added a penalty kick 10 minutes later.

Senior lock Mason Lammers touched down the Acorns’ only try as time expired in the first half. Alex Muhn’s conversion kick missed wide, and Live Oak trailed 10-5 at the break.

The second half opened with tough, aggressive play by both sides. Using its superior speed, Rio gained a noticeable upperhand by the 55th minute. The visitors tallied four consecutive tries, plus three conversions, to end the scoring.

The Acorns host their next game against the Tri Valley Vikings of Pleasanton and Livermore at 11 a.m. Saturday at Live Oak High. The Acorns won last year’s meeting 33-0.
