MORGAN HILL — Placerville’s Mother Lode Rugby Club, hailing from the tough Sacramento Valley Rugby Conference, beat Live Oak 24-13 in a nonconference game Saturday in Morgan Hill.
Live Oak opened the scoring at the 15-minute mark on an unconverted try by senior center Alex Muhn. The Acorns pushed ahead 8-0 with Muhn’s penalty kick 10 minutes later, but missed two other scoring opportunities. Mother Lode responded with an unconverted try, narrowing Live Oak’s lead to 8-5 at halftime.
Using the wind to its advantage in the second half, Mother Lode scored quickly to take its first lead 12-8 on a try and conversion. Ten minutes into the second half, the Acorns went back in front 13-12 when senior flanker John Reichert scored an unconverted try.
Mother Lode added two more tries and a conversion during a rough-and-tumble final 15 minutes to end the scoring.
Live Oak received solid performances from sophomore James David, making his first start at lock, and freshman Richard Walker, who at halftime replaced injured senior Josh Cobain at lock.
The Acorns continue nonleague play this weekend in the prestigious Kick Off Tournament in Sacramento’s Granite Regional Park. Live Oak will open against Lancer Rugby Club — also of the Sacramento Valley Rugby Conference — at 10:50 a.m.
