Neufeld, who graduated from Live Oak in 1994 and played at UCLA before turning pro, is regarded as a valuable backup tight end with good hands and solid blocking ability who can also line up at fullback as a blocker or receiver.

The 29-year-old four-year veteran played in all 16 games last season and started a career-high five games for Buffalo after the two tight ends ahead of him on the depth chart, Mark Campbell and Tim Euhus, both went down with torn ACLs.

The 6-4, 250 tight end caught a career-high six passes for 61 yards and was a key member of the Bills’ special teams unit last year.

“Ryan is a versatile player who does a lot of good things offensively for us,” Bills head coach Mike Mularkey said. “He is not only a tight end, but also welcomes his playing time as a fullback. He is an important asset on special teams as well, and we are excited to have him on this team and look forward to his contributions.”

Buffalo, which lost starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe in the offseason and turned the job over to JP Losman and free agent signee Kelly Holcomb, also signed free agent tight end Joe Donnelly, who played for Atlanta as a rookie last season.
