Plenty of defense, no offense for Acorns against Leland
SAN JOSE — The Live Oak baseball team on Tuesday fell 1-0 to Leland in San Jose, suffering its first scoreless loss in Mount Hamilton Division play in almost a year.
Live Oak was last shutout May 2, 2008 against Leigh.
The visiting Acorns (9-6 overall, 4-5 league) were stymied by Gregg Hipwell, whose complete-game two-hitter was just enough to help the Chargers (6-7, 4-5) pick up their fourth win in five games. Hipwell (4-1) struck out five and walked three.
Leland’s Vinnie Gemette scored the game’s only run on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning.
Live Oak supplied plenty of defense, surrendering just four hits. Acorns starter Rich Martinez (3-3) struck out one and walked one in 4 1-3 innings, and relief pitcher Connor Sutton was hitless the rest of the way.
Alika Bantilan and Sutton singled, Dylan Davis drew two walks and Michael Schreiber stole a base for Live Oak, which will host a rematch at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Acorns and Chargers are tied with Sobrato for fourth place in the division.
