Gilroy – David Masinter went the distance Saturday and West Valley College scored three eighth-inning runs to come from behind and defeat Gavilan 6-3 in a Coast Conference game.

Masinter, a sophomore left-hander from Live Oak who began the season as the Vikings’ closer, got stronger as the game progressed to notch his fourth win in six decisions.

“He’s given us three outstanding efforts in a row,” said West Valley coach Mike Perez, a Morgan Hill resident.

The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the second inning before the Rams scored three in the third. With Gavilan’s Joseph Vasquez matching Masinter, the game stayed 3-2 through seven innings.

West Valley scored three in the eighth as Gilroy product Ben Hemeon started the rally with a single. He was sacrificed to second. Speedy D.J. Anthony came in to pinch run and stole third on ball four to the next hitter. Anthony scored on a passed ball. Another run scored on a passed ball and the third scored on an infield single by Doug Porras of Live Oak, third on the team in RBIs.

“It was a really tough game all the way through,” Perez said. “Gavilan did everything right through seven innings and then made some mistakes in the last two innings and we were able to cash in. I told the guys to keep going and stay close. They did that and (Masinter) was real strong during the last three innings.”
