In a rematch of last season’s Central Coast Section Division I playoff semifinals, Live Oak High’s girls soccer team showed an early glimpse of its potential by beating Santa Teresa 2-0 in the first round of the Palo Alto Tournament on Wednesday.

Then, the Acorn girls showed how much they need to improve the next day in a 2-0 second-round loss to tourney host Palo Alto.

“Our look is not polished yet,” LO coach Tony Vasquez said. “I’m letting them play a little.”

In Wednesday’s win, senior Michelle McDonald tallied an unassisted goal, and freshman Sarah Locarnini added a goal with an assist from senior Lena Marsh.

LO (1-1) plays Homestead today at 12:45pm at Palo Alto High.

Meanwhile, the LO boys soccer team won its opener, then had trouble finishing off a couple of other matches in its first week of play.

“We’re trying to find the right mix,” LO coach Tony Goble said. “We haven’t had a solid 11 guys out there yet.”

On Tuesday, the Acorns routed host Santa Clara 4-1 behind a pair of goals by Garrett Frechette, and goals from freshmen Casey Mott and Matt Altamirano.

Then, in a 2-2 tie against Homestead in their home opener on Wednesday and a 1-1 tie at Yerba Buena on Thursday, LO (1-0-2) took leads that it couldn’t hold.

Hussein Abdullahi tallied both goals against Homestead, while Casey Mott had the lone tally against Yerba Buena.

The Acorn boys take on Pioneer in the Homestead Cup at Homestead High today at 3:30pm.
