After a brief elevation in the level of its play, the Live Oak High girls basketball team experienced a lull against a talented Monterey team on Tuesday, dropping a 71-39 decision on the road.
Coming on the heels of three straight improved efforts, including their first win of the season last week, the manner of the Acorns’ loss to the Toreadores was very discouraging, Coach Richard Silva said.
“We got outrebounded a lot and we gave up a lot of transition buckets,” Silva said. “Our defense just wasn’t there. We finally scored 15 in the first quarter but we gave up 24, and we down 40-23 by halftime. I was very upset about that.”
Silva said Monterey (6-1 overall) proved that it was a good team in the game and he praised his team’s ability to slow down standout ‘Dores guard Maria Perez, but said the Acorns couldn’t stop other opponents from picking up the slack.
“We only had 14 rebounds the whole game,” Silva said. “And, they were converting third, fourth, fifth chances, while we missed way too many putbacks.”
Live Oak (1-5 overall) was led in scoring by Melissa Llanes with 10 points, Megan Smart with seven and Elena Guevara with six.
The Acorns were scheduled to begin play in the Watsonville Tourn-ament on Thursday night against league rival Salinas.
They will play a second-round game today and would continue play with a win.
Meanwhile, the Live Oak boys team was set to begin play in Los Gatos High’s Wildcat Shootout on Thursday night against Leigh (5-1 overall).
The Acorn boys (3-0 overall heading into the game) were scheduled to play a second-round game on Friday, with finals play set for Saturday.
