The Live Oak girls swim team won the Tri-County Athletic League finals 343-287 in convincing fashion, but had to settle for second place in the league, finishing behind San Benito 32-31.

The Hollister girls are the TCAL champs because they won both dual meets. In the old Monterey Bay League, the finals were weighted more than the dual meets, but that was flipped inadvertently this year in the new TCAL, and no one caught it until right before the meet.

Because each team competes against each other twice and gets two points for each win, the dual meets are weighted higher than the finals. In the finals, three points are awarded for each team that a team finishes in front of.

“It is completely flip flopped in how the points are supposed to be scored,” said Live Oak boys swim coach Mack Haines. “The mistake would have been caught when the change was made, but no swim coaches were consulted. That is what happens when the process of change in sports isn’t followed. The shortcut resulted in a glitch that will be fixed for next year. It is unfortunate, but it is not the end of world. It doesn’t take anything away from Hollister.”

The Live Oak girls 200 relay team of Ronni Gautschi, Susan Suchomel, Amy Marshall and Cameron Bair finished second behind San Benito and qualified for CCS. Laura Melroy, Bair, Suchomel and Gautschi won the 200-yard free style race.

The Live Oak boys team (244) finished in third place in TCALs behind San Benito (382) and Gilroy (244). One of the boys relay teams, which actually finished in the lead by a hair, was disqualified for leaving early.

“It was really exciting watching their competitiveness,” Haines said. “They really wanted to win. The kids swam with a a lot of hear heart and determination even with the disqualification. I was extremely pleased with how both (girls and boys) teams swam.”

The boys team sends four swimmers to the Central Coast Section playoffs. David Dunn once again had a strong performance for the Acorns, winning the 200-yard intermediate and the 100-yard butterfly. Dunn, along with Ryan Gautschi, Travis Aviles and Mark Ahlin, was part of the 200-yard first-place relay team, which qualified for CCS. Gautschi also qualified for CCS in the 100-yard breast stroke with his second place finish. Gautschi won the 200 intermediate and also qualified for the 100-yard free style, and Suchomel won the 100-yard butterfly.
