Live Oak High wrestling took home its first team trophy of the season with a sixth-place finish at the Antioch Delta Dual Tournament last weekend.

Coach Robert Fernandez said he was pleased with the solid wrestling of his team and its showing at the 10-team event given that the team forfeited four weight classes.

Live Oak was led by senior Jonathan Redmond (171 pounds), who had three wins, including one pin and one technical fall, and by solid, strong performances from new team co-captains Jason Henderson (125) and Buck Tanner (130), each of whom had two wins, both by pin.

Also for Live Oak, sophomore Brett Jones added two wins, one by pin, and senior Eddie Mendoza added two wins.

The Acorns competed against teams from Oakland, Vacaville, Antioch, Liberty, Galt, and other North Section and Valley teams.

This was Live Oak’s first major varsity tournament of the season and it allowed its young team to continue its development.

On Wednesday, the Acorns kick off their Tri-County Athletic League season by traveling to Salinas to take on the Cowboys. Fernandez said the varsity match is scheduled for 7:30pm, while the JV match is set for 5:30pm, but the times are subject to change.

The Sobrato High wrestling team will travel with LO and compete at the JV level in Wednesday’s meet.
