San Jose – Live Oak was able to make do with five hits Tuesday as the Acorns edged Evergreen Valley 3-2 in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division game.
Jenna Robertson was able to pitch out of several jams and was backed by a strong defensive effort as the division-leading Acorns moved to 21-4 overall, 10-1 in BVAL.
Live Oak scored two runs in the third inning. Dahjaira Lopez led off with a single, moved to second on an error and third on Sabrina LaCorte’s bunt. Robin Nelson’s single scored the first run. She moved to second on a ground out, stole third and scored on an error.
The Cougars (10-11-2, 5-6), who had won four of their previous five games, got one back in the fifth.
But the Acorns got what proved to be the winning run in the sixth as Taylor Sutton doubled and moved around on two wild pitches. Evergreen Valley got its final run in the seventh and ended the game with runners at second and third.
Robertson also pitched out a bases-loaded, one-out, first-inning jam, and got out of another bases-loaded situation in the third. The Cougars had eight hits and stranded 10 runners.
Sutton was 2 for 3 for Live Oak with a double and stolen base. LaCorte and Brooke Willis were defensive standouts for the Acorns.
Live Oak faces road games Tuesday and Wednesday when they meet Pioneer and Mt. Pleasant, respectively.
