Morgan Hill – It’s playoff time in the Central Coast Section and the Live Oak baseball and softball teams both picked up solid placements in their respective brackets.
The softball team was the outright champion of the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division in its first year of competition in that league. The baseball team also took home the Mt. Hamilton title in its first year in the BVAL, earning a co-championship along with Leigh but earning the higher playoff seed through the tie-breaker.
The league title for the softball team, which lost its regular season finale to Piedmont Hills 1-0 on Friday, helped earn them a couple of extra days off. The Acorns (23-5, 11-2 BVAL) snagged the No. 2 seed in Division III, thus earning a first-round bye.
Live Oak will open the postseason at 11am Saturday at Salinas Sports Complex. It’ll face the winner of No. 10 Castilleja (14-7-1) and No. 7 Half Moon Bay (17-10). Those teams square off at 7pm Wednesday at Hawes Field in Redwood City.
On the baseball side, Live Oak earned the No. 6 seed and a home playoff game in the first round. The Acorns will host Santa Cruz at 4pm Thursday.
Live Oak enters its 16th consecutive trip to the CCS playoffs with a 19-7 record, while the Cardinals come in toting a 20-9-1 mark.
“They have a great program at Santa Cruz,” coach Mark Cummins said. “They have won or shared their league title the last seven years in a row. We know we have to play sound fundamental baseball to advance in the playoffs.”
