Live Oak will put on on the pads and do some hard hitting for the first time this season during the green and gold scrimmage on Saturday.
The freshmen start it off at 9 a.m., the JV follow at 10 a.m. and the varsity squad goes at 11 a.m. The players will not have on their their numbered jersies.
The varsity team is pretty much set except if there is a player from another school coming out, said Live Oak coach Glen Webb. There are 45 players on the varsity roster, which was filled out this week.
“There is still a healthy competition for starting positions,” Webb said.
On Aug. 29, the varsity and JV teams will will be scrimmaging at Hollister High School, and the freshmen will take part in a jamboree at Seaside on Aug. 30.
The varsity will get ready for its first game at Milpitas on Sept. 12 with a trip to Fort Hunter Ligget to participate in an extensive training and conditioning program.
Live Oak wraps up its double session this week and returns to its regular school schedule next week.
“I’ve been real happy,” Webb said. “Double days are always trying as far as the schedule goes. Looking back over the years – I don’t always say this at the end of double days because it is kind of a necessary evil – but I enjoy working with these guys, and I feel we’re getting a lot done.”
The varsity will practice Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m. The JV team practices at 3:30, and the freshmen go about 4 or 4:30 p.m. to give them time to get there from Britton or Murphy.
The Live Oak freshmen team, which didn’t know if it would be playing in the fall due to budget restraints, is still looking for additional players.
“They got a roster of about 25 and would like to add another 15 or so,” Webb said. “They went away in summer with the impression that there wasn’t going to be a team. There is plenty of room. If they feel like they are in shape and have a 2.0 grade average, we want them.”
Anyone interested in playing should call Glen Webb at 683-0205.
