Morgan Hill – Despite a strong defensive outing by the Live Oak girls’ basketball team Tuesday against Santa Teresa, the offense struggled and lost 40-27.
Most of the damage was done in the opening and closing quarters of the game when the Saints (9-2) scored 14 and 16 points, respectively, while holding Live Oak to a mere 11 combined points.
With the loss, Live Oak falls to 2-9.
In the second and third quarters, the Acorns’ defense completely shut down the Santa Teresa offense.
But it was a lackluster offense that killed Live Oak. When the defense held the Saints to four points, the offense answered with only one basket.
Sophomore Megan Gulla had the best day for the Acorns with 12 points. Also playing well was Colleen Henninsen, who scored six points and brought down nine boards.
Live Oak will travel to North Monterey County next Tuesday for their last non-league tune-up game at 7pm.
Acorn boys prevail
The Live Oak boys’ basketball team continued to improve with a 67-57 win over Wilcox on the road yesterday.
With the win, the Acorns improved to 8-4 on the season with two games left before league play starts.
Leading the way for Live Oak was Matt van Kuelan, who scored 21 points – 19 coming in the first half. Also playing well were Brandon Powell with 10 points and Abdullahi Mubarik with nine.
“They zoned us the whole game and I am very happy with the scoring output,” head coach Brett Paolucci said.
On Tuesday, the Acorns soundly defeated Mt. Pleasant 69-44 at home.
Despite a strong early showing by the Cardinals, who only trailing by one after the first, the Acorns shut them down in the second and third quarters, holding Mt. Pleasant to a combined 14 points.
Kuelan had a monster game, scoring a team-leading 24 points, including a quartet of threes. Powell was the second highest scorer with 11 points.
The boys return to the court Jan. 5 when they host Monterey at 7pm.
They don’t do mornings
A tough morning schedule did in the Live Oak girls’ soccer team, which fell to 1-4 on the season after losing 4-2 to Foothill High School and 4-0 to Bishop O’Dowd in the Tri-Valley Classic yesterday.
Coach Tony Vasquez acknowledged that the games’ 8am and 11:30am starts were tough on his girls but pointed out that his team was also hindered by bumps, bruises, asthma and bad knees.
Both Acorn goals happened in the second half, when Katie Renteria scored on a corner kick and Jen Emick knocked in another.
Tuesday’s game against Mitty was canceled due to the weather but has been rescheduled for Jan. 6 at 5pm at Live Oak.
