Morgan Hill – The Live Oak High football team got its first win of the 2006 season with a 30-0 shutout against Everett Alvarez at home Friday night.
Acorns’ senior Jeff Mounteer kicked three field goals in the first half, including a career-high 46-yarder and also scored on a 15-yard pass with 2:41 remaining in the game.
“I feel great,” Mounteer said. “I got a lot of help from the players around me. Everybody did their job and they helped me tonight. Everybody played well tonight.”
Live Oak also scored on a 70-yard touchdown run from senior running back Kevin Abbott. Abbott rushed for 164 yards, while the Acorns rushed for a total of 257 yards.
Senior quarterback Chris Nicholls was 5 for 13 passing with a total of 64 yards.
Turnovers and penalties seemed to haunt the Eagles, as Live Oak capitalized on a pair of fumbles late in the first half.
A fumbled punt on the Eagles’ own 7-yard line set Mounteer up for his second field goal of the half while an Alvarez fumble on its own 30-yard line with 12 seconds left in the half set Mounteer up for his 46-yarder to end the half.
Live Oak Head Coach Rick Booth was pleased with Friday’s win.
“There wasn’t a lot of stuff going on in the first half,” Booth said, “There was a lot of hollering at half time. We had to get our guys riled up.”
Friday night’s victory over Alvarez improves the Acorns’ record to 1-1.
The Acorns suffered a heart-breaking defeat to Saratoga in the season-opener when the Falcons came back from a 14-point deficit, scoring all of their 22 points in the fourth quarter, 15 points in the final eight minutes in the game.
Booth said that his team was ready to bounce back.
“We had to put last week behind us and focus on this game,” Booth said. “We had to get our defense set. Every game from here on out will be tough. We’ve got to get ready for Santa Clara next week and each week after that.”
The Acorns will host Santa Clara on Friday at 7pm in their final tune-up before starting the league schedule.
