Dear Editor,

On behalf of Live Oak High School, and especially its football program, I extend my sincere apology to Ann Sobrato High School students, staff and athletic programs for the letter to the editor by Live Oak head football coach Glen Webb that appeared in the March 5 edition of The Times.

While the letter does not reflect the opinion of Live Oak High School toward Ann Sobrato High School, it is clearly, and unfortunately, in violation of the recruitment bylaws of the California Interscholastic Federation (CCS).

Even more damaging to Live Oak, this article crosses the line of good sportsmanship and integrity that Live Oak High School expects and demands of its athletic coaches or, for that matter, any adult on our campus who works with young adults. As a school, we sincerely regret the impression that the letter presents to the community of Sobrato High School, its school leadership and its football program.

It is my sincere hope that the two schools can move beyond this unfortunate incident and refocus the attention of the community on the schools’ athletic programs and our student-athletes, as both of our schools work to instill the qualities that, as adults, we hope to model for our athletes and expect that they will acquire as they mature into adulthood.

Quality athletic programs such as those at Sobrato and Live Oak high schools provide exactly that – the invaluable opportunity to learn the vital life skills of dedication, teamwork, self-discipline, goal-completion and personal integrity. Any distraction from this pursuit unquestionably impacts those we hope to influence most – the young adults in our care.

I wish Sobrato athletes, coaches and the community the very best of success as they strive to build quality athletic programs across all sports – the same quality programs that have been the hallmark of Live Oak athletics of the past. We look forward to building a competitive and healthy rivalry with the Bulldogs in all sports, and I am confident that, as we do so over the next few years, Live Oak and Sobrato athletes, our students and parents and the Morgan Hill community at large, will enjoy and marvel at the quality of student-athletes we field in our programs. I anxiously await the opportunity to see our student-athletes demonstrate those qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork and integrity that we strive to cultivate in them. I am certain the community looks forward to this as well.
