West Valley freshman Drew Fredenburg used his home-mat advantage to win a state Junior College wrestling title at West Valley on Saturday.

Fredenburg, a Live Oak High 2002 grad and son of former Acorn wrestling coach Mike Fredenburg, won three straight matches in the 141-pound division to claim the title in front of a partisan crowd.

“He was on fire,” the elder Fredenburg said. “It helps (to wrestle at West Valley) because he had a lot of people rooting him on.”

The 20-year-old local beat Steve Davis of East Los Angeles College 8-3 in the finals. Fredenburg was clinging to a 3-2 lead late in the match when he scored a two-leg take-down and con-verted a near fall.

Fredenburg, who never placed at the state finals whilein high school, qualified for the Juco state championships by winning the NorCal finals the previous week-end in Modesto.

Fredenburg was also named the Most Out-standing Wrestler in his weight class.
