The Santa Clara County Library District will close all libraries Tuesday. On that day, none of the libraries and online services will be accessible, so technicians can install Horizon software, a major technology upgrade that will enhance the district’s Integrated Library System and public access computer system.
Since libraries will not be open for any onsite or online services, patrons are encouraged to use library resources before Aug. 23, or wait until the next day before checking out or returning materials.
“One of the benefits that this new system will bring is that in the future the library district will have the ability to perform more maintenance, remotely from the Library District Information Systems Office,” said Melinda Cervantes, library director.
“August is generally a slower time of the year, so this brief closure should have the least impact on patrons. Everyone still has a few weeks to check out and renew materials,” said Dion Bracco, Chairman of the County Library District Joint Powers Authority Board.
“We’re excited by the prospect of improving computer services for our residents,” said County of Santa Clara Supervisor Liz Kniss, Delegate for the County Library District Joint Powers Authority. “By closing the District libraries on August 23 we will avoid scheduling additional closures in the future for new upgrades.”
Established by the County Board of Supervisors in 1914, the Santa Clara County Library District serves residents of Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Saratoga and the unincorporated area of Santa Clara County. It also includes two bookmobiles and an online library. In 2010, the library loaned more than 12 million items to 3.8 million visitors.
Santa Clara County Library District collection includes 1.8 million books, videos, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, ebooks and extensive online resources that users can access from home or work.
