With a Morgan Hill library card you can access subscription databases 24 hours per day seven days per week. In fact, there are databases that we have purchased especially to meet the research needs of students in elementary, middle and high schools as well as college.
A database search can provide a much easier, more authoritative source than an internet search. Our librarians evaluate and purchase databases each year for all libraries in the Santa Clara County Library system. This year the database budget was more than $250,000 and we selected over 35 databases.
Some of the current databases that are most popular for student research include the World Book Encyclopedia, Biography Resource Center, Literature Resource Center, and BigChalk, a collection of books, articles, and transcripts searchable by topics. You can also find the full text of magazine and newspaper articles.
Elementary students can be introduced to online searching by using the database, America the Beautiful for that state report. For a science report try the New Popular Book of Science online or EBSCO Animals.
Check it out by visiting the Santa Clara County Library’s webpage at www.santaclaracountylib.org/ Select Databases from the menu of choices. You will need your library card and PIN to access a specific database.
And remember that our reference librarians are always happy to show you how to get started researching a topic and how to use these databases. Let us help you make your next school report an easier task.
