We should invest in a water reclamation plant in Morgan Hill

Dear Editor,

Water and sewer rates continue to climb due to many factors but one of projects we can invest in that would reduce such costs is to invest in a water reclamation plant within the city.

Most people equate costs with the amount of water we use when in actuality the major cost is in electricity – pumping the water from delta, from deep underground and to the sewer/reclamation plant miles away in Gilroy.

At the moment farmers in Gilroy benefit from cheaper reclaimed water while our local farmers don’t. Having a scalping plant, as it’s called, would save the city significantly while providing water for farmers, and big users such as the school districts, our parks and even Fry’s golf course (I refuse to call it the American Mathematical Institute).

It amazes me that we just raise rates when we should be addressing long term solutions that provide better services at reduced costs while reducing our carbon footprint, promoting energy independence and at the same time preparing for global warming. Sometimes I just shake my head and wonder what were we thinking when we miss such opportunities.
