The Acorns just needed to hold Monta Vista for more four seconds.

Up by a point after sophomore guard Megan Gulla’s late basket, Live Oak watched as Monta Vista nailed a hoop at the buzzer to win 30-29 and dash the Acorns’ hopes in .their season-opener at Live Oak Friday night.

“It was one of those shots you try 10 times and make only one or two times,” said first-year Live Oak coach Jeff Perkins. “This time, they made it.”

Despite the loss Friday, the team played hard. But Perkins pointed out several areas in which the Acorns can improve.

The biggest area that hurt the Acorns was in second chance shots. Monte Vista made many offensive rebounds that eventually led to points, allowing the game to be close for the dramatic finish.

Missed shots and turnovers also hindered Live Oak’s chances.

The first quarter looked more like a baseball score with Monta Vista ahead 4-3. The score stayed much the same with the teams heading into halftime with the Acorns trailing 12-11.

Midway through the third quarter, the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run and it looked as though they had Live Oak figured out.

But in the fourth quarter, Live Oak battled back and at one point had a three-point lead.

Leading the Acorns in scoring were junior Breanne Campbell and sophomore Afshawn Chakamian, who both scored seven points. Following close behind were junior Mattie Borges and Gulla, who each added five points.

Even though they lost the game, the girls kept an upbeat attitude and were still pleased with their performance.

“We just lost our train of thought,” said Chakamian. “This was one of the best games we ever played.”

Up next for the Acorns is the annual alumni game today at 5:30pm in the Live Oak High gym. The LO boys will play against their Alumni at 7pm.

After the alumni game, the LO girls will play eight games in two weeks, including two tournaments.

The first of the eight will be on the road against Alvarez Nov. 30.
