The Gavilan softball team cruised to 20-1 victory over the visiting Mission College Saints Thursday afternoon. The big win pushed the Lady Rams’ record to 12-9 on the season and 3-4 in the Coast Conference.

“I was extremely pleased with how our team played today, especially after a tough loss at West Valley this past Tuesday,” said Gavilan head coach Tim Kenworthy. “We really played as a team today and had great focus and team spirit. We’re very proud of our gals.”

The Rams scored five runs in the first inning, 10 in the second and five in the third. Gavilan had a commanding 20-0 lead going into the top of the fifth. Mission put across their lone run in their half of the inning.

Every Lady Ram batter reached base with at least one hit. Kristine Miles and Vicki Velasquez had phenomenal days at the plate. Miles was 4-for-4, with two triples and a double, for nine total bases. She also scored four runs and had six runs batted in.

“Kristine just hit the ball so hard today, like she has all season long,” said Kenworthy. “If we had an outfield fence as almost every college in the state has, two of the balls Kristine hit would have been home runs … one would have been a grand slam.”

Gilroy High product Velasquez was also 4-for-4 with a double, three singles, five total bases, three runs scored and an RBI.

“Vicki just smashed the ball today,” said Kenworthy.

Amanda Jackson went 3-for-3, scored four runs and added an RBI. Winning pitcher Powers went 3-for-4, scored twice and also knocked in a run. In her first start of the season, outfielder Dalila Casas had two solid hits in four trips to the plate, scored two runs and had two RBIs.

Courtney Colianna also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-3 while knocking in two runs and scoring one herself.

The Lady Rams host the Cabrillo Seahawks Tuesday at 3pm.
