Live Oak defeats North Monterey; falls to San Lorenzo Valley on
Thursday
Morgan Hill – The Live Oak Acorns girls basketball team (6-5 overall) is currently ranked No. 9 in a Monterey Bay Prep poll with a win over visiting North Monterey, 47-39, at home on Tuesday and a loss to host San Lorenzo Valley, 52-44, on Thursday.

Senior guard Anna Curley led the Acorns offense with 13 points and 10 rebounds against San Lorenzo Valley. Colleen Henningsen added 12 points for Live Oak in the loss while Mattie Borges and Megan Gulla both contributed nine points.

“We didn’t shoot real well from the floor in the first half,” said Live Oak coach Jeff Perkins. “It was a good game between two evenly matched teams. We got a strong performance from Colleen and Anna had a solid game rebounding.”

The Acorns found themselves staring down a 10 point deficit at halftime and went to work in the second half to erase it. In the fourth quarter, Live Oak pulled within two points, but couldn’t get any closer as the Cougars converted their free throws late.

“We were forced to foul and were taking 3-point shots that didn’t fall,” said Perkins.

Both teams played a zone defense forcing the offenses to shoot from the outside. San Lorenzo’s outside shots were falling while the Acorns struggled to find their rhythm.

On Tuesday Live Oak defeated North Monterey County at home with a strong team effort.

Borges led the Acorns offense with 15 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists while Gulla added 13 points, five blocks, four rebounds and two steals in the win. Henningsen contributed eight points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

“In the second half we rebounded well,” said Perkins. “We played very good defense and shut them down a bit.”

Live Oak returns to the court on Tuesday as they host the Pioneer Mustangs at 7pm, then they head to Evergreen Valley on Thursday before Tri-County Athletic League action begins.
