Katie Rick and Stephanie Armstrong, below, earned all-league

MORGAN HILL — Their 2008-09 resumes say everything you need to know about Live Oak Co-Juniors of the Year Katie Rick and Stephanie Armstrong.

They were decorated players on a water polo team that placed second in league and reached the CIF-Central Coast Section Division II quarterfinals. Rick, a driver, was named Mount Hamilton Division Junior of the Year, and Armstrong made the first-team all-league list at goalie. Rick also made the National Area Team.

“Katie really has taken her game to a whole new level,” Live Oak water polo coach Mack Haines said. “She has great speed and instinct — and Stephanie is key to her success. She can block the ball and anticipate where to make the outlet pass.”

Rick and Armstrong qualified for CCS in three events in spring; Rick in swimming (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke, 400-yard freestyle relay) and Armstrong in track and field (high jump, 300-meter hurdles, 4×400-meter relay).

Injuries did not stop Sobrato’s Melissa Cachopo from distinguishing herself as one of the best point guards in the Mount Hamilton Division — and Sobrato’s Junior of the Year. Cachopo averaged 8.7 points and 4.3 assists per game and made the second-team all-league list.

“She controls the tempo and sees the entire court,” Sobrato coach Natalie Bobuk said. “She makes everyone around her better.”
