A county superior court judge has delayed the sentencing hearing of the man who killed a popular Eagle Ridge gatekeeper while driving drunk last September.
Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Shapero moved Julian Navarro Murillo’s sentencing to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 10 in San Jose’s Department 28. Shapero, who will be in San Jose permanently by then, accepted Murillo’s no contest plea to vehicular manslaughter and driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit back on Dec. 11. Murillo left Lourdes Sanchez’s five children motherless, and he could receive up to six years in prison.
Shapero delayed the sentencing Monday because Murillo’s private defense lawyer, Ruben Munoz, could not make to court, but the February date will also allow a quieter, more personal appearance for the judge to hear from the defendant and any relatives of the victim before he imposes jail time, according to Deputy District Attorney Patricia Henley.
