Dear Editor,

This is a time when legislators tell the public that they are going to cut spending on education, which translates into “I am going to hurt your children,” and still get elected. Pay rates are not high enough to attract good teachers and good teachers are not provided with the resources they need to do their jobs, which makes them look bad.

Gov. Schwarzenegger wants in effect a $469 million tax on teachers – an average of $1,069 per teacher to balance the budget. Democratic Party leaders think the tax is wrong and are asking for your support to fight it.

Schwarzenegger wants to balance the budget without raising taxes on millionaires and giant corporations, so he is proposing to slash the state’s contributions to the teachers’ retirement system.

Taking away this money will make things worse and drive more good teachers into the private sector. Do what you can to pressure the California Legislature to not pass it.

Who makes up the difference? Teachers do. Teachers pay more from their pockets so the governor’s rich friends don’t have to.
