James R. Symons died April 28, 2003, at his home in Santa Barbara after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 66.

Symons was born in the Bronx, NY. He grew up and was educated in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was an Army man – serving his country in France. When he returned to civilian life, he worked for many years in the food equipment manufacturing industry. In 1976 Jim made a transition to real estate sales in Morgan hill where he and his wife were employed with Coldwell Banker as “A team.” In 1987 they relocated to Alameda, and in 1997 retired to Santa Barbara.

Jim had a wonderful out-going personality, a tremendous sense of humor, loved to sing and whistel and was a joy to be with. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Jim is survived by his wife of 27 years Irene (Mycki) McCarthy; son John Donaldson Symons and his wife Caroyln; grandchildren Hannah, John-Paul, Sarah and Scott, all of West Bend, Wisc.; brother George (Brenda) of Malibu and his family Theodore (Melina), Geoffrey (Laura), and Kent (Rebecca). He also is survived by in-laws Glenn and Beverley (McCarthy) Pace; brothers-in-law David (Kat), James (Rory) and Neil and Judith (McCarthy) Bowlby of Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia; nieces and nephews Partricia Brien (Gordon), Theresa and Robert.

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Eleanor (Bloemecke) Symons; daughter Barbara Donaldson Symons; and brother and sister-in-law William and Carol.

The family asks that any donations be made to Hospice Care and Visiting nurses of Santa Barbara, 222 E. Canon Perdido St., Santa barbara, CA 93101.

The time and place for a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapel of Santa Barbara.
