For the fourth year in a row, local children can enjoy Art a la Carte, a day of creative art workshops designed to expand their innate artiness and let them make a mess that won’t get them in trouble. This year’s show is called “Magic of the Arts”. Art a la Carte is a city-sponsored event and free of charge.
This Saturday, besides the art workshops, children will be entertained by Magic Mike’s Funhouse Show and can take part in Safety Fair programs sponsored by the Morgan Hill Police Dept.
Magic Mike will perform two half-hour shows, at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., in the Morgan Hill Playhouse. His program is expected to be popular and the Playhouse is small so advance tickets – they are free – are strongly recommended.
Advance tickets – also free – to Art a la Carte are also available at the Recreation Dept., now located at the Community Center, East Dunne Avenue at Monterey Road. Recreation planners will offer at least 15 different art projects for varying age, interest and skill levels. Moroccan Khamsa hand prints, wind chimes, beaded bracelet keychains, decorated pencils, mask making, magic wands, milagro mobiles, playdough art and the ever-popular Expressions in Paint.
Additional entertainment includes face painting, magic wants, and horse-drawn carriage rides plus roving animal balloon makers and stilt walkers. Cheerleading demonstrations at 11 a.m. and noon; belly dancing at 1:15 p.m. and a prize drawing at 2 p.m. Children will also have an opportunity to write a note to U.S. troops.
The Safety Fair will offer a bicycle rodeo, McGruff the crime dog, a K-9 demonstration (by Sasko the MHPD police dog). Information on child-seat and anti-drug programs will be available.
Lunch is free and children should wear play clothes. “Dress for Mess” is the garb of the day.
The day is designed for infant children through age 11; all children must be accompanied by an adult. Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., 17000 Monterey Road. Details: 782-0008.
