Joshua Pocus, joined the U.S. Army after graduating from Live Oak High School in 2002 and is now stationed in Darmstadt, Germany. He is serving as a Specialist in the Army Intelligence Division and has earned the Hawkeye Award for marksmanship. Because of the nature of his work with the war on terrorism, no specific details concerning his position can be disclosed. His sister and three brothers are excited that Joshua will be coming home for a visit at the end of July.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Benjamin R. Miner, a 1998 graduate of Live Oak High School, assigned to the dock landing ship USS Comstock, homeported in San Diego, recently deployed to the western Pacific Ocean and the Central Command Area of Responsibility.
Dock landing ships like USS Comstock transport and launch amphibious craft and vehicles with their crews and embarked personnel in amphibious assault operations.
Miner is one of more than 5,000 Sailors and Marines embarked with the USS Belleau Wood Expeditionary Strike Group. USS Comstock, along with USS Belleau Wood and USS Denver, deployed several weeks ahead of schedule in response to U.S. Central Command’s request for forces to support the global war on terrorism and to conduct future operations as directed.

Air Force Airman Gavin A. Nicholau has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of training, Gavin studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Nicholau is the son of William and Deborah Nicholau of Oakridge Road, Morgan Hill, Calif. He is a 2001 graduate of Live Oak High School.
