No. 5 seed Valley Christian-SJ scored seven runs in the final three innings to pull away from No. 12 Gilroy High for Wednesday’s 9-2 first-round victory on its home diamond. After the underdog Mustangs (16-10-1) came up empty handed with bases loaded in the top of the first inning, the Warriors (24-10) took a 2-0 lead in their first at-bats on catcher Tyler Norman’s two-run, bloop single and never looked back. Valley Christian starting pitcher John Irby picked up the victory. Gilroy managed only five hits. Mustangs’ starting pitcher Carlos Garcia took the loss, lasting into the fifth inning. Warriors’ rightfielder Jeremy McChesney, from Morgan Hill, went 3-for-4. For the Mustangs, first baseman Ben Hemeon and outfielder Josh Sterling had two hits apiece.
