Avoiding a ‘mini-Raging Waters’ theme, the City Council decided Wednesday to join forces with the Morgan Hill Aquatic Foundation to operate the multi-pool aquatic center coming on line in May 2004.
The Raging Water idea came from a private company that would have undertaken to run the center at a profit for themselves and the city.
“It would be inconsistent with our original intention,” said Mayor Dennis Kennedy.
The foundation, formed by local swimming enthusiasts, has championed the project from its conception.
“This hybrid model,” Kennedy said, (where city recreation staff operates the center with the MHAF) “will give the foundation the opportunity to show its ability to do it.”
Councilman Steve Tate maintained his opposition to the project moving ahead during an economic downturn and requiring $100,000 or more per year in city subsidies, depending on how many months it is open – nine or 12 months.
Council authorized City Manager Ed Tewes to continue negotiations with the foundation to iron out the details but, at Tewes’ suggestion, will refrain from finalizing the arrangement until late in the year when an aquatics manager is hired.
Council also authorized staff to proceed with bidding for pool construction and rough grading.
