Red Phone, I’m concerned that the Santa Clara Valley Water
District board would even consider giving themselves a 5 percent
cost of living increase.
“Red Phone, I’m concerned that the Santa Clara Valley Water District board would even consider giving themselves a 5 percent cost of living increase. Retirees are not getting a cost of living increase this year. Why does the board get to consider one?”
Strong>Red Phone: Dear Concerned, you can put your fears to rest, at least for another year. By state law, the water district board is permitted to increase members’ compensation by 5 percent each year for the meetings they attend. This year, they unanimously declined to give themselves that increase. However, it should be noted that after declining to give themselves a 5 percent raise in 2007, they approved a 10 percent increase last year.
Hope that answers your questions, good caller.
It took police 20 minutes to respond
“Red Phone, it seems you like the police in town, but I have a different perspective. I have a new neighbor with a new pickup that was struck as it was parked. It was totaled and the driver fled, but another neighbor followed the driver home and called police. It took 20 minutes for them to arrive. I call that incompetence and urged my neighbor to sue. Just call us the Longview Crusaders.”
Red Phone: Dear Longview Crusaders, Red Phone is not a huge fan of police, especially that darn traffic officer. But, police in town do a good job given the resources. The city has one of the lowest officer to resident ratios in the county. Now, as far as calling it incompetence because it took 20 minutes for an officer to arrive, Red Phone has to disagree. You’re talking about property damage only, you knew where the driver was and no one was injured. Red Phone would much rather have police keeping residents safe from harm. Red Phone’s not sure on what grounds you’d sue the department. For what, being late? By that measure, we’d all have to sue the cable companies. They’re never on time.
Hope that answers your questions, good caller, though probably not to your satisfaction.
Safeway looking at sign mix-up
“Why do people line up in a single line at the pumps at Safeway? Safeway has tried to put a sign telling people to move up, but the city of Morgan Hill told them to remove it. Why? It is often cued up to the driveway. People should just pick a pump and line up there instead of cause a long line in the parking lot. Can the city allow them to place the signs back telling people to move up?”
Red Phone: Dear Pick a Pump, Red Phone contacted Margarita Balagso, senior project coordinator with the city. She said there has been no communication from the city or the fire department to Safeway indicating they remove the sign at the gas station instructing customers to move ahead to the pumps.
So, Red Phone called Safeway and talked to the station manager who did not want to give his name until he OK’d it with management. But, he did say his superiors gave him a “pink slip” asking Safeway to remove the sign. He said he is looking into the matter.
So good caller, stay tuned.
