Haberland will be attending Wellesley College in the fall.

Barbara Ann Cathcart from Morgan Hill was one of the 417 students who took part in Bryn Mawr College’s 118th commencement exercises May 18.

Barbara, daughter of Hiltrud and Van Cathcart, was awarded a bachelor of arts degree Magna Cum Laude with honors in philosophy.Cal Poly named its President’s Honor List recipients. Local Morgan Hill Students are: Taline Ayanyan, sophomore economics major; Mariam Angel Jabr, junior theater arts major; Heather Michelle Wilson, sophomore animal science major.

Stephanie Chak or Morgan Hill completed Syracuse University Summer College Program. Summer College at Syracuse University allows high school students to participate in one of 10 six-week academic programs taught by Syracuse University faculty. This summer experience enables students to start college study early and test career interests firsthand before they make crucial decisions about their future. Each program — acting and musical theater, architecture, engineering and computer science, information management & technology, law, liberal arts, management, public communications, social work, and visual arts — offers specialized college-level, credit-bearing, pre-professional courses and related activities, including seminars, field trips and special weekend activities. College students live on campus in University residence halls and earn six or seven college credits within the program of their choice.

Dana Madlem of Morgan Hill has graduated from Pomona College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics. Mr. Madlem is a graduate of Live Oak High School and is the son of Tom and Jill Madlem, who are residents of Winchester, CA.

Cynthia Maria Talbot of Morgan Hill has been inducted into the University of California Santa Barbara chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honorary academic society.

Johns Hopkins University, Center for Talented Youth Talent Search honored students in grades seven and eight from Martin Murphy and Britton Middle schools for their high SAT scores. The students were: Lev Bakin, Rebecca Brodan, James Inouye, Eric Matsumoto, Matthew Mito, Mark Pan, Jessica Poon and Melissa Poon, Martin Murphy Middle School; and Justin Kim, Andrew Mains, and Matthew Mito, Britton Middle School.

Caroline “Callie” Siverson, graduate of Gilroy High School in 1999, graduated in May with honors from the University of Southern California, majoring in music.

She has been awarded a full-tuition scholarship by Rice University in Houston to pursue a graduate degree in her special field of French horn performance. Prior to enrolling in the fall, she will be playing professionally with the Monterey Symphony Orchestra in Mexico.

Siverson is the daughter of Erick and Nancy Siverson of Gilroy. They, along with Callie’s brother, Rolf, have been active in school and community music activities in the South County area. Siverson and her brother sang in Phil Robb’s Chamber Singers and Fortino’s band. They were active in choir and with the Gather Musicians, an instrumental group at Advent Lutheran Church and the Wind Symphony in Morgan Hill. They both played in the San Jose Youth Symphony for several years.

Siverson’s senior recital, required as a part of the bachelor’s degree program at USC, was presented this spring in Newman Hall. It consisted of a variety of classical numbers including the Concert in Bb major by Reinhold Gilere composed for French horn and generally regarded as one of the most beautiful and most challenging for French horn soloists to perform.

At the conclusion of her hour-long recital, Siverson surprised her audience by announcing that some mystery guests would join her on the stage for a brief jam session. She introduced Rolf, a student at Pacific University, who came up with a tuba; her father, Erik, who came up with a cornet and a bass saxophone; and John Bensen, a pianist and friend of her father’s going back to days at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill.

Jennifer Megan Bowman of Live Oak High School has accepted the Seattle Pacific University 2003 academic scholarships. These scholarships are renewable for consecutive years through fourth-year senior status, providing the students maintain certain criteria. Seattle Pacific University, founded in 1891, is a fully accredited Christian university of liberal arts, sciences and professional studies located in Seattle, Washington.

The SPU Provost’s Scholar Award of $5000 recognizes students who have excelled academically and have demonstrated potential leadership and service through contributions to church, school, and community.

Stacey K. Anderson, a Live Oak High graduate, accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is a highly selective, national, non-profit honors organization. Founded in 1994, NSCS recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically. The Society was established on the principle that with scholarship comes a responsibility to develop leadership and a duty to perform service.

Skinner of Morgan Hill was named to the President’s List for West Texan A&M University. Students named to the President’s List must have a grade point average of 3.85 or better on a 4.0 scale and carry a minimum class load of 12 undergraduate hours. Morgan Hill residents Michael Aileeo, Michael Seth Chellino, Jeremy Dean Fiala, Scott Gabler, Jay Jonas Johansson, Charles Lee Kinkade, Melissa Joy Mayne, Amanda V. Sitko, Courtney Llewellyn Robinett, and Hoa Thi Nguyen have received degrees from CalPoly San Luis Obispo. Approximately 3,250 students were candidates for bachelor’s degrees, and 290 were eligible for master’s degrees. The university expected approximately 10,000 visitors – family members, friends and guests – to attend the two Commencement ceremonies, at which Cal Poly alumnus and National Baseball Hall of Fame legend Osborne Earl “Ozzie” Smith delivered the featured address.

Sergio Topete of Morgan Hill was awarded a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications, multimedia and applied computing May 24 from California University Monterey Bay. Topete is the son of Elena Topete of Morgan Hill and also resides in Morgan Hill with his wife, Sylvia and their daughters Andea and Adrianna.

Tom McGinty, son of Kevin and Diane McGinty, graduated from the College of Arts and Letters with a double major in history and political science. He will spend the next year working with the poor in Chicago as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

Tom was a 1999 graduate of Bellarmine College Prepatory in San Jose where he served as student body secretary treasurer.

Seth Goodman of Aromas was named to the Dean’s List at Liberty University for the Spring 2003 semester. Goodman was one of 1252 undergraduates who earned Dean’s List on recognition for the spring semester.
