For the past month, the Live Oak High boys volleyball team has made a habit of teasing league opponents, giving them a game and a brief hope of an upset before obliterating them in a flurry of powerful play.

Wednesday night, that habit almost came back to bite the Acorns against a much-improved and motivated Gilroy team.

Live Oak escaped with a 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 victory to keep its unbeaten league streak alive. But it wasn’t easy and Acorn coach James Uthes expressed appreciation for Gilroy’s effort.

“It was a pretty good game,” Uthes said. “Gilroy improved a lot, they really really want it. I think we’re just taking things for granted.”

Cameron Bassett and Chris Deem both had a team-high 14 kills for Live Oak (26-3 overall, 13-0 in TCAL), which is attempting to go undefeated in league play for the second straight season.

After playing their regular season finale on Friday against visiting Alisal, Live Oak will begin competing in the CCS playoffs on Thursday next week. Uthes said he expects to get a first-round home playoff game.

The Acorns also beat Scotts Valley in a non-league contest on Tuesday.
