Live Oak, Sobrato celebrate Homecoming this weekend
Green and gold streamers and balloons fluttered in the slight breeze as Live Oak High’s 2005 Homecoming Parade slowly made its way up Main Street, greeted along the way by waves and cheers from crowds on both sides of the streets.

The parade is the culmination of Spirit Week at Live Oak High, but the beginning of a busy Homecoming weekend for Morgan Hill, as Live Oak celebrations continued into night Friday, and Sobrato High spends today reveling in the fall tradition.

Live Oak High has held a Homecoming parade for many years, with floats designed by each class – and for the second year in a row, there is a freshmen float – plus a variety of convertibles carrying queens, kings and princesses elected by student clubs and nominated for the title of Homecoming Queen.

“It was a great parade this year,” Live Oak ASB Director Norm Dow said. “It’s always a lot of work to put it all together, but it turns out great.”

Candy-tossing convertible riders delighted the kids along the route, and there were plenty of high school students watching and cheering or laughing and waving as friends passed by.

“There are floats from clubs I’ve never heard of,” said freshman Derrick Mallette. “I guess homecoming makes you more supportive of your school.”

The senior float featured a “Top Gun” theme, with students dressed as pilots, some in flight gear and others in leather jackets and RayBans, for the Tom Cruise look. The junior float featured a Hollywood theme, including stars and starlets.

Both Live Oak and Sobrato held spirit week celebrations, with each day of the week having a different theme. Students could choose to dress up to the theme of “Wacky Tacky Day,” at Sobrato, or “Pajama Day,” at Live Oak. During the lunch period each day, the ASB had activities planned to match the theme of the day.

“It builds anticipation,” said sophomore Kaleigh Mallette. “It was really fun. And everybody was getting excited, especially during the rally today.”

Live Oak’s football teams played Salinas Friday night, with the presentation of the Homecoming Court during half-time of the varsity game. Senior Allyson Yamashita, escorted by Abram Abordo, was elected Homecoming Queen.

Fireworks were the finale to the evening’s festivities.

Sobrato will play El Molino High today, with the junior varsity game beginning at noon, after the Homecoming floats are displayed. The varsity game begins at 2:30pm, with the Homecoming Court at half-time. Students will be celebrating with a Homecoming dance in the gym Saturday night.
