Live Oak shuts out cross-town rival Sobrato
MORGAN HILL
Playing in the worst rainstorm of the early winter season, the Sobrato girls soccer team dropped a close match to the Live Oak Acorns Thursday.
Scoring a goal per half, the Acorns quietly quelled the visiting Bulldogs 2-0, improving their record to 3-0-2.
Junior Kourtney Kientzy scored the first goal for the Acorns on a corner kick. Her goal was assisted by senior Alayna Bongiorno.
The Acorns second goal came from their leading scorer, sophomore Fabiola Diaz, who was assisted by senior Lexy Nuno.
Recognizing her open teammate, Nuno crossed the ball from the right to left, and Diaz corralled the ball and shot it past the goal keeper for her fourth goal of the season.
Head coach Tony Vasquez said the win showed how his team is finally starting to mesh.
“They are starting to understand each other,” Vasquez said. “I think it also helps that we’ve done some team bonding events.”
The Acorns have spaghetti dinners together and for their next bonding events they will do a scavenger hunt and a karaoke night.
Senior captain Sarah Locarnini, who recently signed a letter of acceptance to play softball at Purdue University, is a four-year starter on the Acorns soccer team.
“Whatever Loc does, she goes at it 100 percent,” Vasquez said. “She’s very coachable, and a great leader.”
Vasquez said he is happy with how the team is developing, and that Locarnini has gone out of her way to include the younger players.
“And I know for a fact that she wants to get CCS in her senior year,” he said.
The Acorns head into their busiest week of the season as they host Silver Creek today, then travel to prospect on Thursday, and come back to play Gilroy on Saturday.
