Santa and his elves may be working overtime this season but the school district offices and City Hall will close so their employees can celebrate the holidays.

The District Office will be officially closed during the winter break, Monday, Dec. 20 through Friday, Dec. 31, returning Monday, Jan. 3. School sites will also be closed for students and teachers during that time. The last day of school before the break is Dec. 17, and students will return to class on Jan. 3.

For some school district departments in the district, technology for example, the break is an opportunity to take care of specific tasks that can’t be accomplished with a full staff working.

Students will also have a break for President’s week in February, as well as a week’s spring break at the end of March.

A furlough for City Hall employees will begin Thursday, Dec. 23. Employees will use vacation, comp time or unpaid leave, according to Mary Kaye Fisher, the city’s human resources director. City Hall will reopen for business on Monday, Jan. 3.

Virtually no city services will be provided during the furlough although key executive staff members will be available by cell phone in case of an emergency.

The Community and Cultural Center will be open for reserved events during the furlough but no classes will be held.

Calls to utility billing for sewer and water start-ups or turn-offs that are urgent and for emergency utility service requests will receive the following response:

“If it is urgent that your water service start or stop on Dec. 23, 24, 27-30, please leave the following information after the beep and a Public Works representative will respond to turn on or turn off the water. Messages left for turn-ons and turn-offs before 2 p.m. will be completed on the day of the call, while messages left after 2 p.m. will be completed the following business day.

“Please leave your name and address where you are requesting service, the day you want service started or stopped, and a daytime telephone number where you can be reached. Please speak slowly and clearly and spell all pertinent information.”

For water emergencies during the furlough, contact the Police Department at 779-2101.

Limited building inspection services will be available during the furlough. Inspections can be arranged by calling 776-9108.

No services will be provided in Finance, Planning, Business Assistance and Housing Services and Human Resources during the furlough.

Both fire department stations will be staffed as usual except for fire administration.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department main office will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. The main office telephone number for Santa Clara County Fire is 378-4010. If you have an emergency, call 911.

The Morgan Hill Police Department will be open during the furlough. If you have an emergency, call 911. Otherwise, call the Police Department during their normal business hours. The MHPD business office will be closed to the public on Dec. 24 and 25 and on Jan. 1.

To continue the administration of city and Redevelopment Agency contracts, limited public works inspections will be available during the furlough. Mandated services (those required by law and to meet health and safety regulations) will be provided during the furlough. Only some regularly scheduled operations and maintenance will be available during the furlough.

The Times will not publish on Christmas and New Year’s days. The newspaper will be distributed on Friday both holidays weeks. The Times office will be closed Dec. 24 and 31.
