San Martin – The malnourished goat police found Christmas Eve morning in the trunk of a Nissan Sentra is doing well, and will be going to an animal rescue sanctuary within a week said Brigid Wasson, Santa Clara County Animal Shelter supervisor.
The young male goat, which rescuers named Noel, is currently recuperating at the San Martin Animal Shelter and will soon be headed to Farm Sanctuary in Orland.
The goat is gaining weight after being found hog-tied by Morgan Hill police during a traffic stop. Animal control officers took the goat to the animal shelter.
The Morgan Hill Police Department said the driver of the car, Morgan Hill resident Ciro Paredes, was pulled over on Monterey Road and Dunne Avenue after the Nissan cut off a patrol car Dec. 24.
Police said Paredes, 40, was driving without a license and the patrol officer found small bags of methamphetamine and open beer bottles in the Nissan.
Paredes and his passengers – Julio Perez, 27 of San Jose; and Ricardo Malger, 19 of Morgan Hill – were booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of animal cruelty. Paredes was also arrested for driving under the influence, without a license, with an open container and possession of meth.
Perez was also charged with possession of methamphetamine.
MHPD Sgt. Jerry Neumayer said they believed the men were planning to eat the goat.
